About the company

The company was founded in 1946 by John Knowles on a site in Dorset that has been used for the creation of stone products since the early 1900s.  John was a sculptor and monumental mason who worked by hand to create memorials, statues and fountains in a range of materials including local Portland and Purbeck stone as well as marble and granite.  Working alone with these heavy materials, John continued to create these distinctive memorials until his death in 2000 at the age of 84.

After John’s death, his son John Robert returned to England and took back up the work as monumental masons.‘He also diversified the business to include memorial art and renovations and import items such as ceramics and chimineas from Mexico, fountains and water features from the USA and even decorative bronzes from Asia.
